The 8th Annual Ecology Class Canoe Trip was a huge success again. We only had 1 tip over this year and everybody's gear remained dry!
We put in at Ansonia PA and into the beautiful waters of Pine Creek Gorge/Pennsylvania Grand Canyon to start our 3 day journey.
We had a great time paddling, being together, eating gourmet meals, getting a little football in, catching a soccer ball with a sleeping mat (you had to be there for this one), some flashlight tag and getting a chance to see some majestic Bald Eagles.

This years Ecology Class is involved in a year long stream study with The Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) and Susquehanna University Science in Motion (SIM). The SRBC has been monitoring sediment and nutrients in the Susquehanna River Basin for nearly twenty years. During this time, the SRBC noted a need for more involvement at the local watershed level.
This partnership gives local students the opportunity to meet this need. Sunbury Christian Academy students are using high tech equipment to conduct temperature, dissolved oxygen, flow rate, pH and conductivity measurements of Lithia Springs, a third order tributary of the Susquehanna River. In addition to the analyses mentioned, students collect stream water using a depth integrated sampler. These samples are shipped overnight to the PA DEP and analyzed by their laboratory for 10 additional inorganic analyses. To view the results performed this year, please visit Http://www.susqu.edu/sim/waterqualitydata.htm

Recently a group of students from the SCA Ecology class wrapped up a unit on GPS systems and went Geocaching. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which a Global Positioning System (GPS) is used to hide and seek containers (called geocaches or caches) anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and a treasure, usually toys or small trinkets.
Our quest was to seek and find 4 caches in a 15 mile radius from the school: we found 3 of the geocaches, had some Chinese food for lunch an had a great morning Geocaching together.
